Peoria will host a free educational workshop series in October 2025 to support individuals affected by dementia. Presented by Benevilla, the “Aging Minds Matter” program will run every Thursday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Peoria Community Center. Sessions will cover topics ranging from the stages of dementia and related legal considerations to the role of physical fitness in maintaining brain health, as reported by the City of Peoria.
Starting on October 2, Amanda Marcum from Hospice of the Valley will lead with an overview of dementia, detailing stages and signs to observe in loved ones. Following, participants can dive into a "Dementia Moments" simulation on October 9. The program will include an immersive experience that allows participants to better understand the challenges faced by individuals living with dementia. The initiative is designed to build empathy and deepen understanding—key elements in providing effective care.
As the month progresses, the focus shifts toward the practicality of future planning. Yvette Ashworth of Johnson & Ashworth takes the reins on October 16 to discuss proactive business and legal decisions before the disease progresses. Shannon Arriola, armed with a Masters of Counseling, will on October 23, confront the grief and fear associated with dementia, offering strategies to craft a self-care plan.
Lastly, on October 30, the spotlight turns to physical activity. Lorrie Karn, Director of Benefitness Adaptive Gym, discusses the impact of movement on the aging brain, reinforcing the notion that mental well-being might hinge on our physical engagement. Reservations are required to attend the workshops. Peoria residents looking to grab a spot should call Rocio Busby at 623-584-4999 or email [email protected].
