
Philadelphia commuters should prepare for upcoming detours and partial road closures on Market Street. Starting next Monday, As part of an improvement plan, daily transit through Old City is expected to undergo significant changes, the Department of Streets has announced. According to an official statement, westbound lanes from 2nd Street to 6th Street will be shut down, rerouting traffic to Arch Street.
The westbound lane will be fully closed, while eastbound traffic will continue on Market Street with two lanes between 6th and 5th Streets and one lane from 5th to Front Street. These traffic pattern changes are part of planned improvements, including new ADA ramps, a sidewalk-level bike lane, and expanded electrical and fiber optic infrastructure.
Businesses and residences in the neighborhood will maintain access, as per the city officials. Temporary loading zones and delivery areas will be established along Market Street and nearby side streets to support local commerce as space permits throughout the construction period.
Transit changes also extend to pedestrians and public transportation users. SEPTA's L Stations at 2nd and 5th Streets will operate during the work, although elevator and staircase access may occasionally be interrupted. The Navy Yard Shuttle will adjust its stop to 6th and Market, necessitating riders to stay updated via the navyyard.org platform. Meanwhile, SEPTA bus riders should anticipate stop changes and seek guidance from the signage or the septa.org/alerts for the latest advisories.
