Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School in Phoenix’s Ahwatukee area has closed temporarily because of air quality concerns related to roof construction that began on July 23. The Kyrene School District moved students to remote learning starting on Monday, and the campus is expected to reopen after fall break in October. Air quality tests over the weekend showed elevated particulate levels, with the school stating, “This does not mean the particulates are harmful or even that the levels are harmful. However, official results of the air quality tests will take 5-7 days, and we will not take any risks with staff and student health,” according to FOX 10 Phoenix.

Students will take part in virtual learning while the district prepares other campuses for in-person classes. Officials said they are sealing air intakes, replacing filters, and installing air scrubbers, and that “Air quality will be tested repeatedly before students and staff return to campus.” On Monday, transportation was still provided for families who did not know about the closure, and “Students will be supervised until we can contact a parent or guardian for pickup,” as reported by ABC15.

Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary is expected to reopen after fall break. The most disruptive phases of roof construction, including asphalt work and off-gassing, are scheduled to be complete by then.
