For residents of Plymouth interested in a deep dive into the world of public safety, there's a unique educational opportunity on the horizon. The City of Plymouth has opened the application process for the 2025 Public Safety Citizens Academy, a program offering a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of police and fire services. Set to commence on Sept. 11, this gratis, twelve-week course will uncover the multifaceted aspects of public safety through varied presentations and hands-on demonstrations.

Structured to foster a strong partnership between the community and its guardians, the academy convenes on Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Each session is purposed to equip citizens with a broad understanding of what it takes to maintain safety and order, spanning the comprehensive scope of police and fire operations. "The academy is designed to help strengthen the partnership between public safety professionals and the community by sharing information and promoting a better understanding of police and fire services," said a notice published by the City of Plymouth.

Prospective applicants should be at least 18 years of age and must have a connection with the city, whether they live, worship, work, volunteer, participate in a community group, or own a business in Plymouth. There's an important qualifier, though: all participants must pass a background check. It's been clarified, however, that a prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify an applicant from consideration.

Due to limited class size, past attendees will be placed on a waitlist to give new participants a chance to experience the program. Those interested in participating have until Friday, Aug. 29, or until the class is full to apply. For those looking to snag a spot, application details can be found on the academy's webpage or by reaching out directly to Community Relations Officer Kasey Abukar at [email protected] or by calling 763-509-5135.
