Portland recently became the meeting ground for a significant exchange on the future of our digital landscape. An international delegation of experts in digital rights, which spanned various sectors and countries, converged in the Rose City as part of the WorldOregon International Visitor Leadership Program. The group, comprising 14 visitors, engaged in discussions about how to navigate the murky waters of data privacy, internet freedom, and the equitable use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as reported by the City of Portland's official website.
Among the hosts, Smart City PDX’s Hector Dominguez Aguirre shared insights with the visitors on Portland's strategies for handling personal data and the responsible application of technology. The delegation's visit bolstered the city's efforts to address the usage of surveillance technologies, including a ban on government use of facial recognition software. However, caught in the modern whirlwind of progress, the very same officials are the ones grappling with the quandaries of balancing innovation against the fundamental rights of individuals.
The sitting also broached the topic of Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA), illuminating the underpinnings of Portland’s commendable push towards creating an equitable digital echelon. "Portland is honored to be part of this global conversation," Hector Dominguez Aguirre expressed in the meeting with the WorldOregon IVLP delegation, as noted by the city's official website.
