Travelers in the greater Puget Sound region are in for a challenging weekend as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) embarks on a wide-reaching series of highway closures for construction work. The activity commences Friday night, Aug. 22. It will go until Monday morning, Aug. 25. Known as 'Conechella,' the event will entail major construction, preservation, and maintenance tasks on key highways, causing significant traffic disruptions.

WSDOT officials have urged the public to stay informed about the closures and plan for potential delays. According to a statement on the WSDOT website, festival-goers should "avoid the bad traffic vibes by planning ahead, allowing extra travel time and preparing for delays on key corridors between Seattle and north Pierce County." The website lists the complete lineup of affected highways and the nature of the closures, including specific roads and ramps that are expected to be shut or have lane reductions.

Significant closures include southbound I-405 in Kirkland and Renton, a two-lane reduction for the southbound SR 99 Aurora Bridge, complete closure of the southbound SR 99 tunnel, and multiple lane reductions on I-5 in Tukwila and Fife. For the I-405, the Northeast 85th Street on-ramp will be closed completely, and nighttime closures will limit access further. Renton will see a total shutdown of the southbound I-405 for a stretch between North Southport Drive and SR 169. Meanwhile, SR 99 will see activity over the Aurora Bridge for inspections and deck repairs on the First Avenue Bridge. On I-5, travelers can expect signal maintenance and paving operations to affect traffic flow.

The timing of 'Conechella' is attributed to the fleeting season of warm, dry weather that is optimal for construction. According to WSDOT, such a dense schedule of work is a strategic move to maximize efficiency. WSDOT has said that while this may present inconveniences, all closures play a part in their ongoing efforts to preserve and improve vital infrastructure, coordinating with partners and their Emergency Operations Center to help manage the increased traffic flow.

WSDOT has encouraged the public to use alternative transportation where possible and remain abreast of updates. They have encouraged checking travel times on the Travel Center map and the WSDOT mobile app and following the agency's social media accounts.
