Construction activity looms for drivers navigating along State Route 136 in Putnam County, affecting the flow of daily commutes and cargo transit alike. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, beginning August 15 and extending through October 31, commuters should brace for a new traffic pattern to ease congestion. South Jefferson Avenue, also known as SR 136, will undergo a widening project stretching 2.3 miles from I-40 to SR 111. Despite the scheduled disruptions, TDOT promises to maintain two lanes open in each direction near the I-40 interchange to minimize disruption.
"Every project comes with its own unique set of challenges and potential disruptions to traffic flow,” Danny Oliver, TDOT Region 2 Director, stated. “That’s why minimizing congestion is built into our process, from thoughtful planning during the design phase to ongoing adjustments throughout construction. We’re always looking for better ways to keep traffic moving through Tennessee." Travelers have been anticipating improvements to this corridor. While the work may test the patience of daily commuters, the promise is a smoother, more efficient passage upon completion, per the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
The TDOT notice indicates that the right turn lane to I-40 East near Ferrell Drive is set to close temporarily, though drivers will still have access to this route as the lane closures and reconfigurations come into effect. Motorists bound north on Jefferson Avenue may face some adjustments, but can remain on their paths with caution. In parallel, the SR 111 South exit ramp to Jefferson Avenue sees continued work, with the first concrete pour already completed and another slated for the following week. Drivers are informed that before the ramp can be put back into service, the set concrete must pass mandatory strength tests to guarantee safety and reliability.
