A Queens home reportedly operating an unlicensed lithium-ion battery repair business caught fire Sunday evening, resulting in a significant response from the FDNY. The blaze, discovered around 7:30 p.m. at a residence located at 164-18 Pidgeon Meadow Road, saw firefighters tackling approximately 100 burning lithium-ion batteries in the cellar, and the owner of the home has been summoned by authorities for illegal storage and fire code violations, as reported by ABC7NY.
Despite assertions from the homeowner who insists the collection of e-bikes were for personal use, officials found a multitude of these mobility devices in various states of dismantling and damage, reflecting an operation far from domestic leisure, according to a statement obtained by PIX11, the FDNY's Haz Mat units intervened, painstakingly removed and overpacked about 600 individual battery cells from the distressing scene what seems to have been a combustible powder keg waiting to ignite.
The FDNY has not reported any injuries from the conflagration, yet the urgency with which they responded underscores the potential danger these battery fires pose, the homeowner has been served with a criminal court summons over the illegal battery storage and for the numerous fire code violations.
As cleanup efforts continue and the FDNY investigates, a case in Queens has drawn attention to hazardous materials found in a home-based business. Authorities say the operation violated regulations and could lead to legal consequences.
