The Racine community is in mourning following the tragic loss of a local teenager, Shaylani Williams, who died after a drowning incident in Lake Michigan. According to FOX6 News, the 15-year-old went underwater while swimming at Carre-Hogle Park on July 31 and did not resurface. First responders were able to regain a pulse before she was taken to the hospital, but the Racine County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that she later passed away.
Williams, set to be a sophomore at Horlick High School, was remembered not only for her academic aspirations but for her athletic involvement as well. As reported by WISN 12 News, she was a member of the school's wrestling team. The incident has left both her school and family grieving, as the community grapples with the sudden loss of the young athlete and student.
In a statement obtained by TMJ4, Williams' grandmother, Liz Villalobos, shared that her granddaughter had a passion for running and completed her first 5k in the eighth grade. She went on to join the wrestling team during her freshman year, a sport she loved and excelled in. Beyond her athletic interests, Shaylani was determined to follow in her older brother's footsteps and had aspirations of becoming a military nurse.
The family is ensuring that Williams' memory lives on through a touching memento provided by Children's Wisconsin. "We all left with our Shaylani around our necks, yes, and close to our heart. She's always with me. This is just so special to have that, that closeness right by my heart of having her there," Villalobos told TMJ4 in reference to necklaces bearing Williams' fingerprint that were given to family members. The funeral service for Williams will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Racine, with a public viewing scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
