The Rowan Public Library, in a display of community solidarity, has initiated a school supply drive for August, joining forces with the Communities in Schools of Rowan County (CIS). This collaboration aims to support local students by gathering a plethora of educational materials, such as backpacks, composition books, and writing utensils. Patrons are encouraged to contribute new supplies at any branch throughout the month.
According to an official statement from Rowan County, public display cases at the Headquarters and East Branch are set to showcase the donations as they arrive. The necessity for items like paper and notebooks is underscored by the library staff who "work with school age children every day, and we see the [need] for them to have plenty of paper, notebooks, and writing utensils," Laurie Lyda, Library Services Manager, shared with the publication.
Amid the back-to-school season, Melissa Oleen, the Library Director, highlighted another pivotal educational resource - the library card. With no associated costs, Oleen emphasizes the importance of this tool for young learners. "One of the most useful school supplies a student can have is a library card, and there is no cost to have a Rowan library card," she conveyed in statements to Rowan County officials.
Taking advantage of the synergy between public libraries and educational institutions, CIS prides itself on being a leading community-based organization dedicated to supporting students. Its mission to connect necessary resources with the students of Rowan County positions the nonprofit as a key player in educational support, as asserted in Rowan County's announcement. The library card initiative complements this mission by ensuring access to a wealth of knowledge and resources for students, and library officials encourage families to register their children for this complimentary service as the academic year approaches.
