The Regional Transportation District (RTD) in Denver is setting a new precedent in public transportation with its innovative solution to the 'last mile' conundrum, offering free e-scooter and e-bike rides to commuters traveling to certain transit stations. This pilot program, known as First Mile Free, has been launched in partnership with various mobility companies, enabling riders to effortlessly reach the University of Denver and Decatur-Federal stations, potentially saving them around $5 per trip. According to Denverite, the program is facilitated by a grant awarded to RTD, with additional financing coming from the mobility service providers themselves.

The inception of First Mile Free can be directly traced back to Joel Cox, an environmental policy graduate student from the University of Denver. Tasked with devising a plan to enhance the urban transport landscape, Cox drew from personal experience to generate a concept that might seamlessly connect Denverites to their public transit amenities. "I started by thinking about my own day-to-day experience," Cox recounted in an interview with Westword. "Most days, it's just too far of a walk." His notion has now matured into a viable program, confronting one of the critical barriers to higher transit ridership, the daunting gap between home and station that has deterred many from using public transportation.

The issue of accessibility to transit hubs is a shared dilemma among a vast segment of Denver's population, with most residents living beyond a mile from the nearest public transport stop. The pilot program seeks to fill this void, making the journey to these hubs not only feasible but also free. As Denver7 reports, the simplicity of the initiative is part of its charm, as riders won't need to fumble with discount codes or follow convoluted procedures to benefit from the savings, creating a straightforward pathway for increased usage.
