It's the final countdown for Sacramento’s Burger Patch as the beloved vegan burger joint has announced its imminent closure after Labor Day. The plant-based restaurant, known for its meatless burgers, sides, and shakes, has been a fixture of Sacramento’s dining scene for over eight years. "After more than 8 years, Burger Patch in Sacramento is saying goodbye." Burger Patch's owners shared in a statement on ABC 10, reflecting on the legacy they will leave behind.
Amidst rising operational costs and economic turbulence, the founders, Phil and Daena decided they could not feasibly continue, saying "Ultimately, we couldn’t make the numbers work to continue on," in a statement obtained by ABC10. They have now chosen to offer "Eat Like It’s 2019" pricing in their final days, rolling back prices to bid farewell to their community and customer base in a gesture of appreciation for years of support.
According to KCRA 3, the couple's journey into the plant-based business was not only propelled by a commitment to sustainable eating but also personal; Phil Horn, a Sacramento River Cats executive, donated his kidney to his wife Deana Horn, an author, which the couple said "not only accelerated their commitment to plant-based eating but also sparked their passion for serving food that honors every living being," as reported on their website. Burger Patch first made its foray with a pop-up in May 2017 and then established a more permanent presence the following year with a kiosk in the Golden 1 Center—praised as the first of its kind in an NBA arena.
During its tenure, Burger Patch expanded, opening additional locations in Davis, East Sacramento, and Land Park. However, these extensions eventually closed in recent years, leaving the Midtown Sacramento location on 2301 K St as the last to turn off its grills. The company prides itself on having spared the lives of over 100,000 animals through its vegan offerings, a sentiment echoed in their message to customers to "continue feeding kindness—one meal at a time." Phil and Daena encouraged patrons to "Please support your favorite vegan restaurants!" as they said in a statement shared by KCRA 3.
The restaurant's final hours will allow customers to enjoy their favorites through the holiday weekend, with the doors closing for the final time on Monday, Sept. 1, at 9 p.m. Deliveries through this period are exclusively available through the Burger Patch app, indicating a small shift in operations to accommodate the surge of customers expected to bid farewell. The owners have invited the community to share in one last meal and extend possible future opportunities to their team. "They are incredible people and would make great additions to any Sacramento business," Phil and Daena told ABC10.
