A teenage driver was killed and an adult passenger was hospitalized Monday night after a high-speed crash sheared a power pole and sparked a fire on El Camino Avenue near Verna Way in Arden-Arcade, officials said. The eastbound vehicle lost control, struck the pole, and burst into flames, throwing the young driver from the car.
According to CBS News, officials said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before it lost control, sheared the pole, and caught fire. The female passenger survived with what officials described as minor to moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital, the outlet reported.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews had to coordinate with Sacramento Municipal Utility District personnel to de-energize live power lines at the scene before they could safely extinguish the vehicle fire, per the same report. That step is a routine but critical precaution, since downed lines can carry a lethal shock hazard for firefighters working near a burning car.
Hundreds Left Without Power
The destroyed pole knocked out electricity to more than 880 SMUD customers in the surrounding neighborhood, the station's report noted. Outages tied to vehicle-pole collisions tend to run long: SMUD has said crashes into utility infrastructure account for roughly 5% of outages across its territory annually but make up nearly a quarter of total average outage time, since replacing a sheared pole requires specialized equipment and de-energized regional lines, according to a report from the West Sacramento News-Ledger.
Because Arden-Arcade is unincorporated, it falls outside any municipal police department's jurisdiction, and the California Highway Patrol's North Sacramento office serves as the lead agency investigating traffic collisions there, per the CHP. The teen driver's exact age and identity had not been released, and it remains unclear whether mechanical failure, impairment, or another factor contributed to the loss of control.
A Corridor With a Violent History
Monday's crash echoes past collisions on Arden-Arcade's major roads. In August 2022, a high-speed crash on Arden Way sheared a power pole and split a vehicle in half, critically injuring the driver and sending part of the car into a commercial building, ABC10 reported. And in January 2020, a crash into a pole near Watt Avenue and Arden Way cut power to thousands of residents and forced nearby Arden Middle School to cancel classes for lack of heat and power, according to a separate ABC10 report.
The stretch of road sits within a county that state regulators have flagged repeatedly for speed-related danger. Sacramento County ranked worst among 15 large California county jurisdictions for speed-related fatal and injury collisions in 2023, recording 745 such crashes, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. A separate analysis of federal data published by AutoAccident.com in July found Sacramento leads major California cities with a per-capita crash fatality rate of 14.7 deaths per 100,000 residents, with arterial corridors in Arden-Arcade among the region's most frequent collision sites.
State figures also show that teen drivers remain disproportionately at risk statewide. The Office of Traffic Safety reported that 428 drivers aged 15 to 20 were involved in fatal crashes across California in 2023, a 10.1% decline from 476 the year before.
Part of a Recurring Pattern Locally
Monday's fatal crash is the latest in a string of serious traffic incidents Hoodline has covered in and around Arden-Arcade this year. Four kids hospitalized in a crash at Watt Avenue and El Camino Avenue in January, a pedestrian was killed in a pre-dawn crash on Watt Avenue in April, and a driver was found shot after a crash on Fulton Avenue this month. No further details on the teen driver's identity or the passenger's current condition had been released as of Tuesday.
