San Antonio's financial discipline has paid off with top-notch credit ratings from all the major agencies. Standard & Poor's and Moody's both affirmed the city's AAA and Aaa general obligation bond ratings, the highest marks a city can achieve, indicative of a stable fiscal outlook. Fitch Ratings also gave its nod of approval with an AA+ rating and a forecast that's just as steady, according to the City of San Antonio.
The significance of these ratings can't be understated. "The reaffirmed ratings reflect our commitment to long-range planning, strong fiscal policies, and a continued focus on building a resilient budget," said City Manager Erik Walsh in a statement obtained by the City of San Antonio news release. With these ratings, San Antonio will look to fully capitalize on their creditworthiness to confidently move forward with the sale of bonds and notes intended to fund various municipal requirements.
Not only does this financial victory mean a pat on the back for city officials, it translates into tangible benefits for city residents. By maintaining the top credit ratings for a city of its size in the nation, San Antonio ensures lower borrowing costs for crucial capital projects. This fiscal advantage allows more money to go directly into street improvements, public safety facilities, parks, and other vital community infrastructure, as reported by the City of San Antonio.
Each of the rating agencies highlighted specific strengths in San Antonio's financial management. S&P praised the City’s “very strong management practices and policies and consistent track record of conservative budgeting and strategic planning.” Meanwhile, Moody’s pointed out the city's “sophisticated management team with a long track record of closing budget gaps,” according to the City of San Antonio news release. Fitch emphasized the city's formidable “financial resilience,” acknowledging its ample fiscal reserves, the flexibility of its revenue streams, and its overall robust financial position to effectively address future challenges.
