Patrons of Carver Branch Library will need to redirect their literary compasses temporarily, as the branch at 3350 E Commerce St. is shutting its doors for an intensive renovation project. The San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) has announced that services will be moved to the Denver Heights Community Center, located at 300 Porter St., starting on Monday. This relocation will offer a provisional haven for patrons to pick up holds, access public computers, and stay connected with available Wi-Fi, as the Carver Branch undergoes a significant transformation anticipated to span approximately 20 months.
The familiar schedule remains unchanged, accommodating the community Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, for those who prefer a different locale, other fully operational libraries are within arm's reach. These include McCreless Branch Library at 1023 Ada St., Tobin Library at Oakwell on 4134 Harry Wurzbach, Central Library situated at 600 Soledad, and Schaefer Branch Library at 6322 US Hwy. 87 E, according to the City of San Antonio release.
This refurbishing initiative is not just a facelift but an expansion and evolution of the Carver Branch Library, with a planned community meeting space and a revamping of service spaces. Enumerated among the new inclusions is an African American Resource Center and SAPL's maiden dedicated tween space designed for children 9 to 12 years. These enhancements, reflecting an investment of $12.5 million for renovations and an additional $300,000 for public art, are funded by the voter-approved 2022 City of San Antonio Bond, as detailed by the city's website.
Details of these imminent improvements are available for the curious on the SAPL's website. For those seeking general information about SAPL, including library locations and other services, staff are reachable by phone at 210-207-2500 or eager to assist through chat on the library's website.
