Approaching two decades of silence, San Diego authorities continue to appeal to the public for assistance in a case that remains as raw and unresolved as it was the day the crime tore through a local family. The 19th anniversary of Andre Mahan's unsolved murder has prompted renewed calls for tips that could lead to the capture and conviction of his killer. According to a San Diego County Crime Stoppers press release, on August 19, 2006, the 31-year-old Mahan was slain in his apartment on Nogal Street, while his wife escaped injury despite being fired upon.
It was a chilling early morning attack in their home, the suspect—a light skinned Black male who was between 17 and 18 years old at the time of the crime, was seen wearing a red t-shirt over a white one, and further obscured his identity with a black pantyhose cap, after entering the Mahan residence he shot Andre dead and tried to kill his wife. Fortunately, she was not hit. In the aftermath, Mahan's death left his grieving wife and two young children without a father. An arrest, which has eluded the grasp of investigators for all these years, could be closer with the help of someone holding the right information.
The homicide unit at the San Diego Police Department remains committed to the case. The urgency to deliver justice for Mahan and his family has not waned, but grown more pressing with time. With a $1,000 reward from Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest, officials hope this might incentivize someone to come forward.
Community members with any knowledge about the events of that tragic night are encouraged to reach out. Calls to the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit can be made at (619) 531-2293, or tips can be given anonymously through the Crime Stoppers tip line at (888) 580-8477, the offer of a monetary reward stands as a testament to the enduring need to close this chapter for the Mahan family.
