The City of San Diego's Grantville area has introduced a new safe parking program aimed at assisting those who are struggling with homelessness. Announced by local leaders on a county-owned property slated to become an affordable housing project in late 2026, the lot will provide 20 overnight parking spaces until construction begins. According to the County of San Diego, the Grantville Safe Parking program is part of a larger initiative by the County to bolster emergency housing options for the homeless community.
The program, operated by Dreams for Change, offers more than just a place to rest vehicles. Participating individuals and families will receive meals and critical access to various resources. Dijana Beck, director of County Office of Homeless Solutions, told the County of San Diego that, “Everyone’s journey into homelessness looks different and so will their journey out of homelessness.” Beck explains the County's acknowledgment of diverse needs in its approach to combating homelessness.
Visitors to the program can expect tailored case management and assistance in navigating toward more stable housing conditions, as referred by the County’s outreach team. Those enrolled in the program are being connected to employment, along with health and social services resources, which include providing flexible funding to help remove any potential barriers to stable housing.
Dreams for Change is managing not only the new site but also two others. The Bancroft Safe Parking, launched in August 2024 with 27 spaces in Spring Valley, and the Magnolia location, sporting 17 spaces, is currently undergoing renovation. The Magnolia site updates, encompassing new bathrooms, a shower facility, and amenities such as picnic areas and a dog run, will be finalized later this month, per the County of San Diego. Detailed information about the programs and available resources can be found on the County's Office of Homeless Solutions website.
