This morning, the San José Fire Department battled a three-alarm fire at the abandoned MACSA Youth Center in the Mayfair district. According to a social media post by #SJFD, the fire was reported at 1:08 a.m. on the 600 block of Sinclair Drive. Due to the building's complex layout, firefighters had to maintain a defensive stance. The fire, which presented significant challenges because of the many enclosed compartments within the structure, has been contained, and no injuries have been reported.

In a follow-up to the initial reports of the fire, NBC Bay Area provided further details on the incident. Fire officials conveyed to the outlet that they found the building fully engulfed on arrival. San Jose Councilman Peter Ortiz, whose constituency includes the MACSA center, expressed the community's loss to NBC Bay Area, saying, "We wanted to save that building because it meant so much to our Latino community, our Mexicano community from east side." He added, "It is a huge setback, but it doesn’t mean the end."

The MACSA building, now in scorched ruins, has a storied past. In 2010, it was the site of a scandal when it was discovered that leaders may have misappropriated funds from employees' 401ks, leading to charges against two officials. According to Ortiz's statement to NBC Bay Area, the now-vacant center, which was previously run by the nonprofit Mexican American Community Services Agency, had just secured a new investment from the city before the fire. This recent investment aimed at preserving the center embodies a hope that this chapter's abrupt end could lead to a reinvestment in its legacy.

The blaze had repercussions beyond the structure, prompting the Alum Rock Union School District to cancel classes at the adjacent Renaissance at Mathson school. A district spokesperson confirmed this precautionary measure this morning. The cause of the blaze is unknown, and the investigation is ongoing. Initial reports indicated the fire started externally, yet details remain sparse on how or why the youth center was set ablaze.
