San José is taking a new approach to tackling gang activity by launching its latest digital tool, a public Gang Incident Dashboard created by the San José Police Department (SJPD). This online resource is set to provide residents and service providers with up-to-date information on suspected gang-related and gang-motivated incidents. The dashboard aims to foster greater public awareness and support for community-led solutions to gang violence, as reported by the San José Police Department.

The Gang Incident Dashboard is part of San José's collaboration with the San José Youth Empowerment Alliance (SJYEA), an initiative previously known as the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force. The SJPD designed this tool to promote transparency and aid an informed community response to an enduring issue. Chief Paul Joseph of the SJPD stated, "This dashboard reflects a shared commitment to public safety—not just from the police department, but from our entire city network working to prevent violence and support our youth," per SJPD News.

Data on the dashboard is meticulously compiled by the SJPD's Crime Analysis Unit (CAU), drawing from reports flagged by patrol officers and scrutinized by the Gang Investigations Unit (GIU). Adhering to state law and FBI Uniform Crime Reporting standards, the classification of incidents distinguishes between 'Gang-Related,' involving known or suspected gang members, and 'Gang-Motivated,' incidents benefiting or advancing gang activities. This process ensures that the information provided through the dashboard is consistent and precise.

While the San José Youth Empowerment Alliance spearheads the strategic side of youth safety and violence prevention, the SJPD handles the groundwork of identifying and analyzing gang activities. Mayor Matt Mahan regards the dashboard as vital to resource allocation, saying, "Mapping gang activity helps us better deploy resources — both to prevent violence and to focus youth outreach and programming where it can make the biggest difference," according to SJPD News. He views this tool as an extension of the city's wider commitment to transparency and taking action based on data.
