The community of Sarasota is mourning the loss of a young soul, Zaria Miller, a 5-year-old girl who was tragically swept away into a storm drain after a water main break near Sarasota Christian School. According to FOX 13 News, the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Bahia Vista St. as Zaria was playing near a culvert with other children when the accident took place, dragging her approximately 100 yards through the rushing waters.
In the wake of the tragedy, a WTSP report confirmed her passing at All Children's Hospital, days after the harrowing event, with the family sharing through a GoFundMe update "It is with a broken heart I have to share that Zaria has received the ultimate healing, and is in the arms of Jesus." Sarasota County Sheriff's Office also confirmed her death.
The community's response was immediate and robust; a GoFundMe campaign initiated to support the Miller family quickly captured the hearts and wallets of many, raising in excess of $16,500 within a day. As WFLA reported, by yesterday afternoon, the amount amassed had climbed to $74,194, far surpassing the family's initial needs for medical, funeral, and monthly expenses, prompting the family to direct the surplus towards pediatric charities.
The generosity shown highlights a community united in the face of tragedy, coming together to provide comfort to the bereaved. "The family is grateful for all the love and support shown over the past few days," the GoFundMe organizer penned.
