Over the weekend, Pittsburgh's PNC Park transformed into something more akin to a circus than a traditional baseball diamond, all thanks to the midnight-colored antics of the Savannah Bananas. As reported by TribLive, the exhibition team brought their signature Banana Ball to town, complete with bat tricks, viral dance moves, and a hefty $50,000 giveaway to a fan in a spectacle that can best be described as part-baseball, part-performance art. Upending what we typically expect from America's pastime, the Bananas sold out the park two nights straight, drawing some 40,000 fans.
One hometown hero, bat trickster extraordinaire Alex "Ziggy" Ziegler, had an emotional return to Pittsburgh. "I cried — I definitely teared up — and it's probably going to happen several more times tonight because this is a blessing," he said, per TribLive. Ziegler, a Butler High School and Pennsylvania Western University alumnus, has married his love for baseball with entertainment, courtesy of the Bananas, much to the delight of local fans. His bat tricks, a viral sensation in their own right, have become a staple of the Bananas' games.
But it wasn't all showboating and back flips. The team also found time to connect with the community in a meaningful way. Before taking the field, the Bananas and their opponents, the Texas Tailgaters, dropped by UPMC Children's Hospital to spread some joy. The visit wasn't just another PR stunt; it was personal, especially for player Ryan Cox. "This is my hometown, so it's an honor to be here and have some fun with these kids, play some games, and hopefully not let them beat us too bad," Cox stated during the visit to UPMC Children's Hospital, as detailed by WPXI.
Amidst the tricks and flips, both Ziegler and Cox were conscious of the memories they were creating at PNC Park. Having each attracted roughly 1,000 people they knew in the crowd, the pressure was on to not just play well, but to entertain.
