Scottsdale's latest initiative to combat food insecurity hits the streets on August 7, as a new trolley route offering key connections to essential services gears up for operation. The route is slated to link the Scottsdale Food Bank, Granite Reef Senior Center, and Vista del Camino Community Center, according to details furnished by the city. Running from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, the trolley ensures that residents, particularly those without cars, can easily access vital community resources.
What sets this service apart, in addition to the convenience, is the establishment of a 30-minute loop with stops tailored to the needs of seniors and individuals in need, including the food bank's new location at 7601 E. McKellips Road, Building C. The initiative is seen as a responsive measure to the food bank's recent expansion, which, although providing increased service capacity, left a gap in public transit accessibility for the nutrition center, now bridged by the trolley's introduction.
Reinforcing the importance of accessible nutrition and support services, Scottsdale Human Services manager Sue Oh highlighted the rationale behind this new offering. "We wanted to ensure that residents who rely on the Scottsdale Food Bank and do not have access to personal transportation can continue receiving the support they need," Oh told the City of Scottsdale. Addressing concerns about the mobility barriers that often hinder the most vulnerable, Oh's statement underscores the city's commitment to inclusivity.
Moreover, the trolley furthers the reach of the Brown Bag Program, recently relocated to complement the food bank's move. This service, crucial for sustaining food security among seniors, distributes a medley of fresh and shelf-stable grocery items bi-monthly. And now with the trolley's operation, participants who once collected these bags from the Granite Reef Senior Center will experience seamless transportation to their freshly stocked pick-up point, assuring that all who rely on the program have continued access to their foodstuffs.
Scottsdale residents looking to utilize the food bank or the Brown Bag Program are advised to coordinate with Vista del Camino by calling 480-312-2323 for scheduling an appointment prior to their visit. This instruction comes as part of the integrated effort to streamline access and foster an environment where no resident is left without the ability to secure nutritional assistance when it's most needed.
