A commercial building in Seattle's Ballard district was the scene of a fire last night, starting from a dumpster alight in the alley of the 1700 block of NW Market St. The Seattle Fire Department was alerted to the situation at 8:42 p.m., with multiple calls received at the Fire Alarm Center. Initially, Engine 18 was dispatched, but the situation escalated, prompting a call for a first alarm assignment as flames spread from the dumpster to the building.
Containment of the fire was achieved by 9:21 p.m., and the fire was completely extinguished by approximately 9:40 p.m., according to the Seattle Fire Department. Despite the late hour, fortunately, the building was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported. A total of about 55 firefighters were on the frontline, tackling the blaze, which included seven engines and four ladder trucks among other supporting units.
In the aftermath of the event, the Seattle Fire Department has underscored the importance of fire safety regarding dumpsters and other waste containers. They have advised that such bins should be located at least five feet from walls and roof eave lines, kept in a secure area if possible, and should not be allowed to become overfilled. These simple precautions can be instrumental in preventing potential fire hazards.
