Seattle's streets are about to become playgrounds, as the city gears up for Play Streets Week running September 5-14, 2025. According to Seattle's Department of Transportation blog, residents can easily transform their block into a communal playspace by applying to host a Play Street. Applications must be in by August 25 if you want to join the celebration during the special week.
For those looking to get involved, there are several ways to quickly sign up. You can fill out a simple registration form, apply for a permit through the Seattle Services Portal, or just call the provided number for assistance, including free interpretation services. "We offer free interpretation. When you call, tell us – in English – what language you would prefer to use," the SDOT blog states. Notably, there's no need to worry about immigration status; it's not part of the application process.
This initiative isn't just targeting the younger population; Play Streets are designed to be a community affair for residents of all ages. The idea is to reinvent the street as a place for neighborly connections, well beyond its traditional role for vehicles. Apart from organizing for kids, it's a perfect opportunity for adults to meet fellow neighbors and establish new friendships.
By encouraging such gatherings, the program aims to strengthen the social fabric of local neighborhoods. "Imagine what you can do on your block when you realize that Seattle’s streets are for more than just cars!" the SDOT blog encourages. Play Streets inherently position Seattle as a city that values public spaces where community members can easily gather to socialize, play, and hang out in a fun environment.
