Last Thursday, a massive fire engulfed a 19-unit apartment complex at 516 Canal Street in San Rafael, displacing 55 residents and injuring eight. The San Rafael Fire Department, in a concerted effort with multiple agencies, responded to the emergency at 5:36 a.m., as reported by Hoodline. The blaze, which required around 90 minutes of firefighting, is under investigation by the Marin County Fire Investigation Unit.
In the days following the tragedy, an ongoing recovery and investigation effort has led to further disheartening news. Officials reported the discovery of a second deceased victim within the severely damaged property. "Due to the state of the remains found, no immediate identification can be made," the City of San Rafael conveyed in a statement obtained by the San Rafael Police Department. This unfortunate update brought the confirmed death toll of the fire incident to two persons.
While the cause of the fire remains undetermined, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division has taken possession of the deceased's remains for identification. Both the identity efforts and the post-mortem examination, as well as the investigation into the cause and manner of death, are detailed in reports from the Marin Sheriff’s Office. Despite the complexities, they remain committed to "work most efficiently and diligently to aid this victim and their family."
As recovery operations continue, local authorities and Mayor Kate Colin have focused on uniting the community to support the affected residents. "If you can make a donation – please do," Mayor Colin emphasized, according to a statement she made in a City of San Rafael briefing via Hoodline. The Canal Alliance and the Marin Community Foundation are orchestrating financial assistance for the victims, with public contributions directed through specified online channels.
The investigation into this catastrophic event is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information, particularly photos or videos of the fire taken between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m, to step forward. The San Rafael Police Department requests submissions to the ATF Tip Line or through the “ReportIt.com” app, as noted by the San Rafael Police Department.
