An interim study at the Oklahoma state Capitol, led by Sen. David Bullard, R-Durant, reviewed proposals to add the Kiamichi and Glover rivers to the Scenic Rivers Act. The measure would limit projects such as hydroelectric plants and dams in order to protect the rivers and maintain water resources in Southeast Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Senate.
"Southeast Oklahoma is blessed with an abundance of pristine, free-flowing rivers that fuel local economies and support tourism and recreation," Senator Bullard said. He added, "We have a responsibility to protect these scenic waterways, but if we don’t take action, others will decide their future for us." The study included participants such as Bill Redman of the Kiamichi River Legacy Alliance and Charlette Hearne of Oklahomans for Responsible Water Policy, who shared information and perspectives on maintaining healthy river ecosystems, as reported by the Oklahoma Senate.
Senate Bill 1010 proposes adding the Kiamichi and Glover rivers to Oklahoma’s Scenic Rivers Act. An informal meeting is scheduled for August 27 to allow stakeholders to discuss questions and concerns. Participation details are available from Sen. Bullard’s office, as stated by the Oklahoma Senate.
