
The landscape of political leadership in Shelby County saw a significant shift this past Monday, as the Board of Commissioners elected Shante Avant as Chairwoman and David Bradford as Chair Pro Tempore for their upcoming term, a statement from the Shelby County government revealed.
Elections, which took place on Monday, concluded with Avant and Bradford both securing nine votes after several rounds of voting, Avant's election marks her as the third Black woman to take up the chairman's gavel, coming into the role with extensive experience in community development and equity, while Bradford is stepping into his Pro Tempore position with a keen focus on fiscal responsibility and economic development; each of them due to assume their roles on September 1.
Reflecting on the election outcome, Commissioner Shante K. Avant expressed her gratitude and a steadfast commitment to the wellbeing of Shelby County residents: "I am deeply honored to serve as the next Chairwoman of the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, In these critical times, our focus must remain on delivering the best outcomes for the people of Shelby County," Shelby County's announcement quoted her saying.
Commissioner David Bradford echoed a similar sentiment of cooperative leadership and committed stewardship for the county: "It is an honor to be elected as Vice Chair for this board, I look forward to working closely alongside Chairwoman Avant and my colleagues to ensure we benefit every corner of our county," according to the release, Bradford told the Shelby County officials, laying out a vision of unity and growth for the communities under their charge.
