The Shelby County Health Department has initiated a series of mosquito control activities targeting the spread of West Nile Virus (WNV), a mosquito-borne illness that can potentially lead to severe health complications. So far, five human cases have been reported in the county in 2025. In a bid to combat the spread of the virus, which has been found in the majority of ZIP Codes across Shelby County, officials have outlined a schedule for truck-mounted spraying of EPA-approved insecticides to control adult mosquitoes that may carry WNV. Residents are being reminded to wear insect repellents containing DEET when outdoors as an added protective measure.

Under the department's program, each ZIP Code area in the county is slated to be sprayed at least twice during the mosquito season. Yet, the weather must permit these operations to move forward. To ensure public awareness, official information lists the upcoming planned spraying schedule starting with September 2, 2025, between 3:45 a.m. and 6:45 a.m. for ZIP Codes including 38104 and 38114, among others. Further sprayings will be conducted throughout the week, with a second session on September 2 from 7:45 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. targeting areas like 38138 and 38139.

The Health Department has emphasized that while most cases of WNV cause no symptoms and go undetected, certain demographics, particularly individuals over the age of 60, are at a heightened risk for developing severe illness. Official maps pinpointing the occurrence of the virus in mosquitoes collected throughout Shelby County have been released, underscoring the pervasive presence of WNV and reinforcing the need for these control measures. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to stay informed about the scheduled sprayings and to take personal precautions to reduce the risk of infection.

According to the same source, upcoming spray sessions will continue with additional routes on September 3 and September 4 during early morning and evening hours. The specific ZIP Codes and times for these operations can be found in route maps provided online.
