Commemorating the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office (SBSO) took part in several memorial events to honor the lives lost and celebrate the resilient community that withstood one of the worst natural disasters to strike the Gulf Coast. According to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office's post, Sheriff James Pohlmann, alongside his command staff, attended the Annual Day of Reflection Breakfast, a Memorial Mass, and a Wreath Laying ceremony last Friday.
A highlight of the day was the Day of Reflection Breakfast hosted by the St. Bernard Parish Public School System at Chalmette High School's Ninth Grade Academy. The event not only recognized the strides made by the school district since the hurricane's wrath but also honored its community partners, among them, the SBSO. High-profile state and local officials, including U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy and Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice John Weimer, were present at the breakfast that served as a reminder of the parish's journey from devastation to recovery.
The solemnity of the occasion continued at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church with a Memorial Mass presided over by Archbishop Gregory Aymond. This spiritual gathering also drew government officials, such as Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges, who joined in the somber reflections and tributes to the survivors and victims of Katrina.
