The Montgomery County Department of Transportation's (MCDOT) recent creation—the Auth Lane Pedestrian Bridge in Silver Spring—has not just connected the Kemp Mill community, but also garnered admiration statewide. Recognized by the County Engineers Association of Maryland (CEAM), the bridge project was honored with the 2025 Project of the Year Award. This accolade shines a light on projects that perfectly respond to citizens' needs, while being cost-effective and showcasing innovation in the use of county resources.

With the intention of offering safe passage over a tributary to the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, MCDOT's new structure allows residents to continue to use a walking path once interrupted by nature's course. Indeed, over time, the dry creek had evolved, becoming an obstacle due to erosion—a challenge that the department has now adeptly managed to counter. According to a Montgomery County press release, the pedestrian bridge claimed victory in the small project category, a bracket reserved for infrastructures costing less than $1 million.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, per Montgomery County, praised the project, saying, "It does not surprise me that this project won such a prestigious award because it perfectly meets the requirements of responding to community needs in a cost-effective and innovative way." The bridge, designed by MCDOT's Department of Highway Services, not only facilitates passage but is also ADA accessible, ensuring convenience for all community members.

Completed this June, the bridge stood its first test against heavy rainfall in July, an event which served to promptly remind the community why such a structure was essential. Chris Conklin, MCDOT Director and an engineer, told Montgomery County, “It is MCDOT’s mission to build safe, accessible infrastructure for the public.” His words underscore the commitment to construct enduring assets that will benefit the Kemp Mill area for years to come.
