Southwest Airlines is ramping up its offerings from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, adding nonstop flights to San Diego, Austin, and Miami. Beginning October 2, travelers will have direct access to San Diego five days a week, a schedule that follows through to the start of March 2026. Adding to the expansion, beginning March 8, Southwest will increase the frequency of flights between Milwaukee and Austin with additional Sunday services, as confirmed by FOX6Now.

In a move aimed to capitalize on spring break travel, Southwest is also introducing flights to Miami, scheduled for Saturdays, and to Cancun, Mexico on weekends. These new routes will be available starting March 7, offering travelers options for tropical escapes directly from Milwaukee. Amid these additions, the airline has announced an increase in daily flights to Chicago-Midway starting March 5 – enhancing connection opportunities within their network. This comes in conjunction with reported decreases in passenger traffic at MKE, with a dropped figure of approximately 280,000 passengers from January to June of this year compared to the same period in 2024, which was reported by WTMJ.

"Southwest’s daily nonstop service to both San Diego and Austin connect Milwaukee with two of the best cities to visit in the U.S., and the Miami flights are timed for cruises, many of which start and end on Saturdays," said Airport Director Brian Dranzik, with the intention to motivate the usage of these new routes to further support and justify additional flights offered by carriers from MKE in the future. This comment, obtained by FOX6Now, highlights the strategic timing of the Miami flights to align with peak cruise season times.

The expansion comes as Southwest Airlines faces increased scrutiny following recent policy changes. The airline discontinued its policy of offering free checked bags and introduced assigned seating last month. These changes represent a departure from policies that had previously differentiated the airline in the budget travel market, as reported by The Journal Sentinel.

Southwest Airlines, the largest carrier at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, has expanded its service to 19 nonstop destinations. This development increases the number of available travel options, despite a recent decline in travel statistics. The new routes are expected to enhance Milwaukee’s connectivity to major U.S. cities, supporting both leisure and business travel in the region.
