St. Charles Parish has opened the newly renovated Bethune Park in Norco, marking its first major update in more than 25 years. The project was made possible through a partnership between the parish government and Shell Norco, with community leaders, parish officials, and company representatives attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony, according to the St. Charles Parish news release.
The renovation also serves as a tribute to Bethune High School, the parish’s first African American high school established in 1951. Parish President Matthew Jewell emphasized the school’s role in the community during the event.
Upgrades to the park include a new pavilion, a covered basketball court, an accessible playground, and improvements to lighting and drainage. The project was funded in part by Shell Norco’s $500,000 donation, which primarily supported the playground and basketball court construction, along with Parks and Recreation Ad Valorem tax funds.
Shell Norco Vice President Tammy Little noted the company’s commitment to supporting the community. The event concluded with a free-throw contest between the St. Charles Parish Recreation Department and Shell Norco staff.
