A St. Louis man has been sentenced to two decades behind bars for the fatal shooting of another man at a Dutchtown gas station last year. Mohamed Abdi, 45, received a 20-year sentence after entering a guilty plea to second-degree murder charges just as his trial was on the verge to begin. According to a statement obtained by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office, the incident that took place on July 7, 2023, was documented on surveillance video showing Abdi confronting an individual before fatally shooting Jametric Alfonzo Steele, 52, of East St. Louis.
Steele, who attempted to flee and hide behind parked cars, ultimately succumbed to a gunshot wound. The distressing footage played a pivotal role in the proceedings, capturing the crime which occurred in the 4100 block of Gravois Avenue. “There is no real justice when there is such a senseless loss of life. What this sentence delivers is accountability and a measure of justice,” stated Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore, in an announcement reflecting the outcome of the case. Abdi, who submitted his guilty plea yesterday, will serve his sentence in the Missouri Department of Corrections, as per the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office.
Assistant Circuit Attorneys Christopher Faerber and Dominic Cusumano took the lead on prosecution for an case that Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore highlighted for its importance in maintaining public safety standards in the community. “Our office will continue to pursue cases like this with resolve, because holding those who commit acts of violence accountable is essential to achieving a higher level of public safety in St. Louis neighborhoods,” said Gore in the same statement obtained by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office.
