As the new school year approaches, the Stillwater Police Department is urging students to call 911 directly in an emergency. In a recent Facebook post by the Stillwater Police Department, they explained that calling yourself helps them get accurate information and send help faster. It’s not just a reminder—it could save lives, since every second counts.
The alert highlights potential issues with relaying information through intermediaries. Delays are a real danger, if the mediator is unaware of your location, or lacks crucial details of the event unfolding. Moreover, "Their particular diagnosis of the emergency, might well be faulty," the Stillwater Police Department post warns.
There is, however, a clear distinction made for non-emergencies. "For non emergencies such as party complaints, parking issues, and similar situations, call our non emergency line at 405-372-4171," the Stillwater Police Department advises. This line begins with a recorded message, but listeners are urged to stand by, and follow the prompts to reach dispatch.
The message from Stillwater Police Department couldn't be plainer: in an urgent scrape, dial 911 straightaway. "Help us help you," they urge, and they're not just talking to kids.
