The Stockton Police Department has put the word out that they're stepping up efforts to combat impaired driving with a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint scheduled for August 15, 2025, according to a recent statement they posted online. Accoring to the Stockton Police Department, the operation will take place at an undisclosed location within city limits from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Research shows that DUI checkpoints can reduce fatalities and injuries from alcohol- and drug-related accidents by up to 20 percent. Police select checkpoint locations based on past collision data and DUI arrest rates to maximize deterrence. During these checkpoints, officers will check for valid driver’s licenses and signs of impairment, aiming to keep delays brief. Drivers suspected of drug impairment will be evaluated by specially trained officers, reflecting a growing focus on drug-related incidents.
It's startling to consider that in studies of California drivers involved in fatal accidents, 30 percent had drugs in their system, surpassing those who had consumed alcohol, with marijuana showing up in 7.4 percent of drivers compared to 7.3 percent who tested positive for alcohol consumption.
Drivers caught driving under the influence may face serious consequences, including jail time, fines exceeding $10,000, license suspension, and mandatory DUI classes.
The Stockton Police Department wants to make it clear that the funding for this safety initiative stems from a grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, with backing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of a concerted effort to urge the public to take action by reporting suspected drunk drivers to 9-1-1.
