Tensions escalated in Studio City after residents confronted a man they suspected of mail theft, leading to a violent altercation on Tuesday night, KTLA reported. According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had been breaking into mailboxes using a key, leading several people in the complex on the 4200 block of Longridge Avenue to take action.
A surveillance video from the previous Friday showed the suspect at work, dumping mail into a paper bag, after the postal worker’s master key was stolen weeks earlier, NBC Los Angeles reports; Flyers were posted to alert residents, some of whom later spotted the alleged thief, one even going as far as pepper-spraying him during the confrontation and police responded to the scene around 11:13 p.m., but the suspect fled before their arrival.
"I popped out to film him just to say ‘Hey, you like to rob us’ and he tried to swat the phone away. I pepper sprayed him," Timothy Brehmer, a resident involved in the confrontation, told NBC Los Angeles. The situation worsened when the suspect brandished a knife, and Brehmer bloodied himself while breaking the suspect's windshield with a baseball bat to stop his escape.
Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the suspect who they believe fled on an electric scooter, Fox Los Angeles explains; the car, left behind with smashed windows and flat tires was a visible testimony to the struggle that ensued that night, and despite multiple residents reporting this to the Los Angeles Police Department and providing details, the suspect remains at large the Los Angeles Fire Department treated Brehmer for his injuries at the scene.
The LAPD Van Nuys Division is actively investigating the incident and is asking anyone with information to come forward by contacting them at 818-374-1964; the ongoing mail thefts, the residents' frustration mounting after a mail carrier was robbed of a master key, have led to this moment of vigilante justice gone awry.
