Compton Man, 38, Held on $100K Bail After Fleeing Fatal Atlantic Ave Crash

A woman is dead, and a Compton man faces multiple felony charges after police say he was driving at a high rate of speed when his Volvo slammed into a Chevrolet turning off Atlantic Avenue in North Long Beach, then fled the scene before returning and getting arrested. The collision happened around 2:40 p.m. Saturday near the 6900 block of Atlantic Avenue, one of two fatal crashes Long Beach police responded to that same day.

According to CBS News Los Angeles, 38-year-old Adalberto Delgado-Perez was driving a 2019 Volvo northbound on Atlantic Avenue at a high rate of speed when he collided with a 2004 Chevrolet that was turning left onto Atlantic Place. The impact caused the Chevrolet to overturn. A woman riding as a passenger in the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man driving that vehicle was transported to a local hospital; his condition has not been released. Long Beach Police Department preliminary records indicate the crash occurred at that time and location, striking what had been two occupied, stationary vehicles stopped at the intersection.

Four additional people involved in the collision, including two children, were reported unharmed. Delgado-Perez initially fled the crash scene but later returned and was taken into custody there, per the same account. Authorities believe he was intoxicated when he struck the woman.

Charges Carry Years in State Prison

Delgado-Perez was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, and hit-and-run resulting in death, the outlet reports. He resides in Compton and was held on $100,000 bail.

Under California Penal Code § 191.5(a), gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated is a felony punishable by four, six, or ten years in state prison, with penalties climbing to 15 years to life for repeat DUI offenders, according to the Ehline Law Group. Separately, California Vehicle Code § 20001 makes leaving the scene of a fatal accident a felony carrying two, three, or four years in prison and fines between $1,000 and $10,000, as outlined by the Law Offices of Andrew Cefali. A third statute, Vehicle Code § 23153, covers driving under the influence while committing a negligent act that injures another person, a wobbler offense that can bring up to four years in state prison, per DCD LAW. No formal court arraignment filings have been made public, and the identity of the deceased woman has not yet been officially released.

A Deadly Weekend on Long Beach Streets

The Atlantic Avenue crash was not the only fatal collision Long Beach police handled that day. Officers also responded to a separate multi-vehicle crash later that night in the 5700 block of Pacific Coast Highway, where one driver died and two passengers were hospitalized after being struck while exiting a shopping center, according to the city's police blotter.

The 6900 block of Atlantic Avenue has seen other serious incidents in recent memory, including a non-fatal stabbing there this past June and a fatal shooting at a Valero gas station on the same stretch back in July 2023, as reported by the Long Beach Post.

City's Vision Zero Goal Slips Further Away

The crash lands in the middle of a broader reckoning over road safety in Long Beach. The city set a formal goal in 2020, under its Safe Streets Action Plan, to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by 2026 as part of a Vision Zero commitment. Instead, 2025 brought 53 fatal traffic collisions, the highest annual toll the city has recorded in more than a decade, according to LAist.

Those 2025 crashes killed 32 pedestrians, bicyclists, and e-scooter riders, more than the 29 homicide victims Long Beach recorded that same year, LAist also reported. In response to mounting pressure, Mayor Rex Richardson proposed creating a dedicated Traffic Safety Division within Public Works as part of the city's FY27 budget, adding 12 new positions aimed at addressing the rising death toll on local roads.

The case adds to a string of hit-and-run collisions Hoodline has tracked across Long Beach in recent months, including a fatal Shoreline hit-and-run and a case where a cyclist was killed on Cowles Street. Police have not released further details on the Atlantic Avenue investigation, and it remains unclear when Delgado-Perez is expected to be arraigned.
