In a sobering moment that shattered the daytime calm, a man was critically injured in a drive-by shooting in Sacramento this past Tuesday. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office reported that North Division Patrol Deputies hastened to the scene near Morse Avenue and Lerwick Way around 12:15 PM, after receiving reports of a shooting incident.

Upon arriving, they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Deputies immediately began to render medical assistance, and the victim was swiftly transported to a local hospital, where he is now fighting for his life in critical condition. Initially responding to what appeared to be yet another act of violence in the city, Sheriff's Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators soon joined to thoroughly investigate what had unfolded.

The investigation quickly led to the identification of the alleged assailant, 46-year-old Jason Hankins. Detectives pieced together the events, concluding that the victim had been sitting in the back of a vehicle when Hankins reportedly drove by, firing and striking the victim once in the head. A Facebook post by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office detailed these events.

The following day, Major Crimes Bureau Detectives acted decisively to locate and apprehend Hankins. In their pursuit, Hankins attempted to convincingly hide his vehicle and the firearm used in the crime, but detectives managed to uncover them both. Hankins was subsequently booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail under charges of attempted murder. Currently, he is held without eligibility for bail and is scheduled to make a court appearance tomorrow, August 15.
