In a shocking outbreak of violence in an otherwise peaceful rural community, a 61-year-old man named Carmine Faino fatally shot his neighbor, 57-year-old Lori Wasko, before unleashing a hail of bullets on responding state troopers in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. As reported by 6abc, as well as Hindustan Times and ABC News, the incident took place after Wasko's boyfriend called 911 to report that shots had been fired.
The two state troopers, identified as Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, were dispatched to check the situation and were soon, after entering the area, ambushed. Despite being injured, with Perechinsky taking two shots to the chest and Jenkins wounded in both arms, they managed to quickly apply a tourniquet and were eventually evacuated from the scene under heavy gunfire by a fellow officer. Governor Josh Shapiro praised the troopers' heroism, with Perechinsky later commandeering a passing tractor-trailer to shield the roadway from further harm, an action Shapiro said "exemplifies the absolute best of the Pennsylvania State Police."
Col. Christopher Paris of the Pennsylvania State Police held a press briefing, stating the seriousness of the situation. "I don’t want to speak to his motive leading up to this. I would say you can draw certain conclusions from the standpoint that we believe Faino shot our victim prior to our arrival, and then from a position of tactical advantage fired dozens and dozens of rounds," Paris told reporters, as Hindustan Times reported. An emergency medical technician responding to the chaos was also injured when his vehicle crashed while trying to evade the gunfire.
Faino, who was moving around and at one point was seen sitting on a propane tank, also managed to shoot down a drone during the confrontation. Law enforcement officers attempted to negotiate with him but to no avail, as he continued to pose a threat and was ultimately shot by members of the special emergency response team. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, but Paris noted the suspect's preparations indicated it was not likely a "spur-of-the moment-type decision," according to ABC News.
The violence shook the local community, which is generally known for its tranquility. Erika Mills, a resident living close to the site of the incident, reflected on the day's events: "This is a very very quiet town. There has never been anything comparable," she told 6abc. The troopers involved were in stable condition at the time of reports, and the wounded EMT was also stable. The community, while relieved that there was no longer a threat, remained in a state of shock over the unexpected eruption of violence in its midst.
