After a significant international manhunt, the Tampa Police Department, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Apprehension Unit and Colombian authorities, has apprehended 36-year-old Joshua Roelofs on charges of DUI Manslaughter. Roelofs, described as a white male born on March 9, 1989, was caught after evading an earlier court appearance related to the fatal crash that claimed two lives. According to the Tampa Police Department, the arrest signals a relentless pursuit of justice, no matter the distance a fugitive might attempt to put between themselves and the law.
According to the Tampa Police Department, Chief Lee Bercaw was quoted as saying, "The apprehension also sends a clear and resounding message that the Tampa Police Department will tirelessly pursue justice, no matter how far a fugitive runs." The manhunt was initiated the moment Roelofs failed to make the court date, eventually tracking him to Colombia. Through coordinated efforts between the U.S. Marshals Task Force and Colombian officials, they were able to capture Roelofs at Finca Rivendell Paradise Girardota hotel in Antioquia, Colombia.
The operation culminated on the evening of August 19, as Colombian authorities escorted the fugitive on a flight to Miami International Airport. There, Roelofs was met by Tampa Police Department's Fugitive Apprehension Unit's officers and was subsequently transported to Orient Road Jail, now held without bond.
According to the Tampa Police Department, in a display of international law enforcement solidarity, the swift and seamless apprehension of Roelofs stands as a reminder of the global reach of justice. "This outcome is a testament to the dedication of our investigators and the power of strong law enforcement partnerships,” Chief Bercaw emphasized. The collaboration not only brought a fugitive back to face the charges but also ensured that the victims of the tragic crash had a chance at seeing justice served in a court of law.
