A 17-year-old has been detained in connection with a shooting that took place at the Christy Recreation Center in West Philadelphia, which resulted in injuries to five individuals, including two children. According to NBC Philadelphia, the suspect, identified as Keon Kiah, voluntarily surrendered to police last night and faces a slew of charges, including 13 counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.
The incident that prompted this arrest unfolded on Wednesday afternoon, where a fight outside the rec center prefaced the violent response. Kiah, alongside a group of youths, later arrived at the scene and discharged multiple rounds, wounding two teens, two children, and a recreation worker, as CBS Philadelphia details. The youngest victims, a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, received graze wounds, while a 32-year-old city employee, and two 16-year-olds suffered more severe injuries; with one of the teens being shot in the face and placed in critical condition.
In a press conference cited by CBS Philadelphia, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel provided an overview of the case. "Earlier that day, city staff and a police officer on detail at the rec center broke up a fight outside. Later, the teen returned to the corner with a group of other young people and fired multiple shots," Bethel explained. Following the shooting, investigators scoured surveillance footage and sought assistance from the public to identify four individuals believed to be involved.
The police investigation progressed rapidly with law enforcement releasing videos showing multiple suspects. The footage depicts four individuals—one carrying a black duffle bag and another carrying a dark-colored backpack—leaving the recreation center following the shooting.
