Amid political tensions in Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton criticized Democrat members of the Texas House who left the state to disrupt a quorum. On his official website, Paxton said, "Instead of showing up to work and doing the jobs they were elected to do, House Democrat members have fled the state in a cowardly desertion of their responsibilities as elected officials," according to the Office of the Texas Attorney General.
Known for fleeing to break quorum, the lawmakers have again become the focus of Paxton’s criticism. Paxton said, "These jet-setting runaways abandoned Texas, abdicated their duties in the House, and sacrificed their constituents for a publicity stunt." He is prepared to take action to hold the lawmakers accountable. The situation has led to debate over the balance between political strategy and elected responsibilities, as reported by the Office of the Texas Attorney General.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is relying on a 2021 Texas Supreme Court ruling that allows the House to arrest absent members to ensure a quorum. This ruling is the basis for current legal actions that could involve bringing back lawmakers who leave to block votes. Paxton said, "I am prepared to do everything in my power to hold them accountable because these liberal lawmakers are not above the law," and said he will use "every legal tool" to stop future walkouts, as stated by the Office of the Texas Attorney General.
