Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has set his sights on former Congressman Beto O’Rourke’s group, Powered by People, initiating an inquiry over possible illegal funding activities connected to the recent walkout by Texas Democrats aiming to stymie a vote on controversial election laws. The investigation alleges that O'Rourke's organization may have played a part in an illicit plan to provide financial incentives to those lawmakers who chose to flee the state in an effort to break the legislative quorum, as reported by the Texas Attorney General's Office.
Paxton didn't mince words when he pointed the finger at the absent Democrats: "Any Democrat coward breaking the law by taking a Beto Bribe will be held accountable." These accusations come as Paxton vows to explore all communications and documentation in search of evidence for this alleged scheme. These runaways, according to Paxton, crippled Texans' trust by deserting their posts, leaving Texans in a lurch to wonder if bribes prompted their exodus, as per the statement obtained from the Attorney General's Office.
In the public domain, it is said that Powered by People has emerged as a primary financier behind the cohort of Texas House Democrats who opted to leave the Lone Star State thereby, halting legislative proceedings. The funds furnished by the group to facilitate their departure might have breached bribery laws alongside other Texas statutes including regulations on campaign contributions, coercion of a public servant, and misuse of political office.
In his aggressive pursuit, Paxton has mandated a Request to Examine from Powered by People, seeking out documents and correspondences that pertain to unlawful acts, particularly their hand in the Democrats' quorum-busting tactics. Paxton has made clear his intent to pursue strong legal measures against those Democrats who fail to report back to the House by the deadline set by the Speaker.
