
Governor Greg Abbott announced that schools in the Rio Grande Valley will receive more than $1.1 million in career training grants to support vocational education. The Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants, awarded by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), total $1,174,500 and will provide training for about 2,140 students in high-demand fields, according to the Office of the Texas Governor.
The grants were presented by TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III at Texas Southmost College in Brownsville. State and local officials joined school staff for the announcement.
Edinburg Consolidated ISD received $350,000 to train nurses in partnership with Texas Southmost College. Roma ISD was awarded $216,226 to expand nursing programs through South Texas College. Weslaco ISD received $308,490 to train students as nursing assistants, also in partnership with South Texas College.
Other recipients include Texas Southmost College, which received $84,614 to train welders, and South Texas ISD, which was awarded $215,184 to train medical assistants through Texas State Technical College–Harlingen.
Funded by the Texas Legislature, JET grants cover the costs of equipment needed to launch career and technical education programs, helping prepare students for careers in essential industries.
