Governor Greg Abbott announced that Texas has received federal approval for a new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program waiver that will change how benefits can be used. Beginning April 1, 2026, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients will no longer be able to use their benefits to buy sweetened drinks and candy, according to the Office of the Texas Governor.

Governor Greg Abbott said the new restrictions are meant to improve Texans’ health by directing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funds toward more nutritious foods and away from less healthy options. Molly Regan, Deputy Executive Commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, said the initiative could help improve health outcomes and quality of life. The plan is designed to address both dietary health and fiscal responsibility, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.

Beginning April 2026, new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program guidelines in Texas will no longer allow the purchase of sweetened drinks and candies. The change follows federal approval of Governor Abbott’s request to set restrictions on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-approved foods. About 3.5 million Texans use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for essentials such as meats, vegetables, and dairy. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is informing retailers and recipients ahead of the change. More information is available on the HHSC SNAP Food Benefits webpage or by calling 2-1-1, as stated by the Office of the Texas Governor.
