In a move aimed at easing the burden of college application fees, Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) announced the launch of Free College Application Week. Set to run from October 13 to 19, this initiative allows Texas residents to apply to public colleges and universities within the state without bearing the application cost. According to a news release by Governor's Office, the governor stated, "Texas prioritizes opportunities for students to pursue the best education they need to succeed in high demand, good-paying jobs after graduation."
Free College Application Week has its foundation in Senate Bill 2231, passed during the 89th Texas Legislative Session, and requires all public colleges and universities in Texas to waive admission application fees for residents applying through ApplyTexas. A variety of tools complement this initiative, including My Texas Future and the Direct Admissions program, aiming to assist students in navigating their educational and career paths more smoothly.
THECB Commissioner Wynn Rosser was quoted in the press release, noting, "In addition to the cost savings, combined with other tools available to Texans for planning and achieving educational and career goals, free application week removes a barrier so more students can take their first step toward higher education." The event, slotted to be an annual occurrence, will subsequently be held on the second full week of October each year.
My Texas Future provides a platform for Texans to discover postsecondary opportunities, equipped with personalized interactive features that help users align their interests and skills with potential careers and academic programs. It even includes a career quiz that suggests occupations based on user preferences, and enables comparison of various Texas-based careers, and, credential programs by parameters like pay, local demand, and post-graduation salaries.
Direct Admissions is another incentive that seeks to streamline the college application process by offering students a list of Texas institutions that could pre-accept them, based on academic criteria shared through their My Texas Future profile. This tool provides the chance for students to secure college spots as early as the end of their junior year of high school, fostering a proactive approach to college planning.
