Tensions escalate in Texas as Attorney General Ken Paxton takes sweeping action against Robert Francis O’Rourke's organization, Powered by People, with a petition intent on revoking its charter. As reported by the Texas Attorney General's office, Paxton labels the group's activities as "unlawful conduct," including deceptive fundraising and the distribution of so-called "Beto Bribes" to Democratic legislators for breaking quorum.
According to the Texas Attorney General's office, Paxton's office has been unequivocal in its condemnation of O’Rourke and Powered by People, stating, “Robert and his unlawful influence scheme, Powered by People, have deceived donors, bought off Texas politicians, and unlawfully assisted runaway Democrats in avoiding arrest.” The Attorney General is gunning for heavy consequences, pushing the court to enforce an earlier Temporary Restraining Order (TRO), imprison O’Rourke, and dissolve the organization for failing to abide by legal standards. This move, Paxton claims, is to ensure that "there must be consequences" for the alleged disregard of law.
O'Rourke, however, has shown defiance, seen as less than 24 hours after a court order to cease fundraising activities, he continued to gather support. In an event in Fort Worth, O’Rourke's stance was clear as he reportedly told the crowd, “there are no refs in this game, f*** the rules.” The statement was a bold rebuke of the accusations and a candid dismissal of the restraining order, escalating the legal tug-of-war between his organization and the Texas Attorney General's office.
In response, Paxton has filed for contempt and submitted an amended petition for a quo warranto action in Tarrant County District Court. The filing seeks to revoke Powered by People’s authority to operate in Texas, with Paxton alleging the group has shown disregard for state law.
