Residents in Germantown may soon see development begin on “The West End,” a proposed mixed-use project intended to convert the currently undeveloped Arthur Property into a walkable community space. According to the City of Germantown, the local Planning Commission reviewed the initial sketch plan yesterday, with discussions centered on its design and potential to serve as a new residential and social area.
The proposed plan includes a variety of housing types, including apartments, condominiums, townhomes, and single-family homes, intended to accommodate diverse lifestyles and income levels. Additional features such as a public square, boutique hotel, walking trails, a lake, and over 10 acres of green space are also proposed to attract both residents and visitors. During initial discussions, concerns were raised about potential traffic impacts and how well the development would fit within the existing neighborhood.
Planning Commission Chairman John McCreery stated, "This type of informal review is about gathering input early," noting that this initial stage is intended to collect feedback to help guide the project, in a statement obtained by the City of Germantown.
The developer is required to complete several steps before the proposal can move forward. These include submitting additional engineering and traffic studies, along with more detailed project plans for further review. Approval from both the Planning Commission and the Board of Mayor and Aldermen is necessary before any construction can begin. The public was given an opportunity to provide feedback, but no comments were made during the initial meeting.
