Earlier today, a shooting on the Lower East Side of Manhattan left three men injured outside the Vladeck Houses public housing complex. According to ABC7 New York, the incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. at the city-run housing on Jackson Street. A 33-year-old man was shot twice in the back, a 26-year-old received a gunshot to the right hand, and a 25-year-old suffered injuries to the leg and head. They were all taken to the hospital and are listed as stable.
Three persons of interest were detained by police, and a gun was recovered from the scene. Authorities are actively working to determine the circumstances that led to the gunfire. According to AM New York, additional firearms were also found at the location. This violent incident comes despite NYPD records showing only two shootings in the 7th Precinct through Sunday, matching the year-to-date total from 2024.
The first two victims were discovered by officers from the 7th Precinct responding to a 911 call about shots being fired. The 26-year-old has been transported to Cornell Medical Center, and the 33-year-old to Bellevue Hospital, with both men reported in stable condition. Later, it became known that a third victim, a 30-year-old man, had flagged down an EMS crew for a gunshot wound to his right leg and a graze wound to the back of his head, and was also taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, as reported by AM New York.
While charges are pending as the investigation continues, the early morning violence has drawn attention to the prevalence of gun-related incidents in New York City's public housing areas. The three individuals taken into custody are being questioned, and the NYPD has made it a priority to thoroughly investigate every angle to understand the motivations behind the shooting. Law enforcement hopes these efforts will not only bring justice to the victims but also help to maintain safety and order within these communities.
