As the mercury rises, Thurston County braces for a scorching weekend with temperatures that could pose a serious risk to those without shelter. In response, Thurston County Public Health and Social Services has declared a “Hazardous Weather” advisory to bolster shelter-in-place operations from August 23 through August 25. According to the county's announcement, Olympia Mutual Aid Partners (OlyMAP) plans to canvass the streets, providing emergency supplies to those in need.

For residents battling the heat, Sergio's Place Service Center will be offering a cool reprieve with extended weekend hours. Normally shuttered on Sundays and Mondays, the center will welcome guests from noon to 8 p.m. during this period, and will close at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Located at 3501 Mary Elder Rd NE, those seeking shelter can find the guest entrance off Martin Way, with pets being welcome. For additional details, contact can be made by calling (360) 706-2287.

With temperatures climbing, Interfaith Works is collecting hot-weather essentials at Sergio’s Place, 3501 Mary Elder Rd NE. (Note: no parking on Martin Way.) Donations are accepted Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Requested items include bottled water, sports drinks, popsicles, non-perishable snacks, and other supplies to support those most vulnerable to the heat, as per Thurston County, Washington.
